Jodhpur is called "Blue City" after its blue house walls. Jaipur is known as "Pink City" and is named after the surrounding red castle wall. Rajasthan is the largest state in India and has three major scenic spots associated with colors. Udaipur is located 560km southwest of Delhi and on dried highlands. Since the historic centre is probably what most people come to visit and that’s almost certainly where the ZTL is I don’t see how this claim stands up.Figure 1 depicts the vicinity of Udaipur in southern Rajasthan state in western India as acquired in March 2007. I pass in and out as a tourist without coming near them.” is strange. Moreover, to claim that ZTL’s haven’t “.been relevant when visiting them for sightseeing. How on earth can can you offer sensible advice if you don’t know the rules. One thing to bear in mind is that outside ZTL’s, where streets are in a grid pattern, there tend to be a lot of one way streets.įor someone offering advice to travellers to Puglia, and those driving, to freely admit that they don’t know the purpose of the ZTL’s is rather odd. If your accommodation is inside a ZTL, you can usually make temporary arrangements to drop off and collect your luggage provided that you make prior arrangements through the accommodation. Visitor car parking is usually just outside the historic cores. Then google Monopoli ZTL on this link and scroll down for the map: Places like Polignano a Mare also used the sea cliffs as part of their defence.

The historic cores were often surrounded by defensive walls.

Newer parts of towns tend to be on a grid layout. They have seemingly random street patterns. The historic cores of most settlements are easily distinguished in a map or google earth view.

The ZTL’s also help local businesses and residents to go about their daily lives and they avoid having lots of visitor car parking taking up space within the historic cores. The historic cores are what most visitors come to see - but they were not “planned” with vehicles in mind. One of the purposes of the ZTL’s is to protect the historic cores of villages, towns and cities from unnecessary traffic. Very simply, if you understand the purposes of the ZTL’s you will know roughly where to find them. Edited: 3 years agoĬassie, post #6 is indeed rather irresponsible.Ĭomparing ZTL’s with Ryanair flight procedures is plainly ludicrous.

Hope that helps you focus less on the car being a driver for basing yourself in Bari, or not, if you forgive the pun.īuone vacanze in Puglia. And that then opens up Salento for a short hop visits, including the spectacular Lecce which sits 3-5 spots above Bari on my list of places to take friends to when visiting Puglia. But aside from that I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere on offer in other (smaller) destinations such as Ostuni and Polignano a Mare, finding them much more interesting than Bari. The old town in Bari is well worth visiting when in Bari. But if your focus is south of Bari in the Valle d’Itria then there are more interesting possibilities. Where do you intend to visit when you are in Puglia? If you are planning of travelling north to Trani, Vieste and thereabouts - which are beautiful amazing places - then it makes sense. Whether you base yourself in Bari or not shouldn’t turn on having a car. There are many inexpensive off street secure garages (indicated by a blue P sign) around Bari even when you can’t find on street parking. I have always found a space around the central station, although it has cost between 6-8EUR overnight on Piazzo Aldo Moro. But at tops 15 minutes driving around has found me a spot. Finding a parking spot is a chore for sure, especially around the Madonella, Umbertino and Murat quarters. I am in and out of Bari twice a week usually. So I wouldn’t let it put you off driving anywhere in Puglia, even in Bari. I pass in and out as a tourist without coming near them. It just hasn’t been relevant when visiting them for sightseeing.

I have no idea where the ZTL zones are in most of Puglia’s towns and cities. That is to say that for most of us it’s an avoidable academic possibility, that doesn’t put us off flying Ryanair. For the unfortunate 1% who don’t there’s a 55EUR penalty sting in the tail. 99% of us turn up at the airport with our boarding pass printed or on our phone. Think of the ZTL like the Ryanair check-in policy.
